As our Floor Coverings International Maple Grove team will tell you, tile flooring is capable of enduring foot traffic, frequent spills, and other wear and tear. However, neglecting to keep it free of soap scum, mold, or grime will wear down your tile and grout over time. Maintaining the tile itself is fairly easy: sweep and mop frequently, and use a scrubbing brush to clean stuck-on messes.
Grout, on the other hand, requires more precision. Homeowners in Maple Grove and around the country can keep their home beautiful and their home values rising by following these simple cleaning steps for grout.
Things You’ll Need
- A grout brush – The narrow lines of grout are easier to tackle with the right brush. You can usually find one for less than $20 in any home improvement store.
- A cleaning solution – If you don’t have a cleaner intended for grout, you can use a simple solution of one part water to one part vinegar as a quick and easy alternative.
- A washcloth or towel – For wiping up the mess.
- Baking Soda – You can either make a paste of baking soda and water or use the powder as is, but the paste is handy for cleaning vertical grout.
Things to Avoid
You don’t want to use any caustic cleaners such as chlorine bleach or overly abrasive cleaners. They can do more damage to the grout than if you had left it alone entirely. Similarly, don’t use brushes made from metal or other materials that might damage the grout.
How to Clean the Grout
Starting from the highest point, splash your brush and the grout with the cleaning solution and scrub vigorously along the lines of grout. When you meet a tough stain, apply your baking soda powder or paste to the spot and continue scrubbing. It should foam up, acting similarly to more powerful alkaline cleaners to break down the stain without harming the grout. Continue scrubbing along all the lines of grout, wiping up the drips as you go. Perform the cleaning monthly or as needed for sparkling tile and tidy grout!
