Living_5.jpgLooking to add some hardwood flooring to your Maple Grove, Plymouth, Rogers area home?  Many homeowners and business owners choose hardwood flooring for kitchens, bedrooms, living rooms, offices, and even entryways.  One major thing to consider when choosing new wood floors is if you want engineered hardwood flooring or solid hardwood flooring. Here at Floor Coverings International Maple Grove, we offer a wide range of engineered flooring styles to our customers.

Engineered Plank Design

Engineered hardwood flooring planks are made up of multiple layers of plywood and solid hardwood. The middle layer runs horizontally along each plank, adding extra stability. There are usually between three and twelve total layers. The most layers, the more durable the flooring will be. These layers are fused together with high levels of pressure and heat, and finished with a stain, gloss, and wear layer.

Benefits & Drawbacks

The multi-layer design of engineered wood offers a range of benefits. First, it makes the wood more water resistant. This makes it a great flooring option for a basement, or in another area that could see some humidity and moisture, like a bathroom. The pressure that fuses each plank together also results in a very hard, durable material that’s great for high traffic areas. Engineered hardwood can be installed pretty much anywhere in a home or business! Engineered wood planks are also more eco-friendly than hardwood because they use less solid wood. Lastly, the installation process for hardwood is much faster than for a solid wood floor.

Engineered hardwood flooring is a real hardwood flooring.  Unlike laminate and vinyl flooring, you will have the true texture and appearance of hardwood flooring.  Engineered hardwood flooring is a bit lower maintenance than solid hardwood flooring as well.

One downside to the thin layer of solid wood in an engineered hardwood plank is that your new floor can only be refinished once or twice during its lifetime. If you anticipate a large amount of surface damage, solid wood might be a better option.
