Porcelain tile is the perfect middle ground between ceramic tile and natural stone. Ceramic tile is affordable, simple, and utilitarian, while natural stone is pricey, durable, and luxurious. Porcelain falls between the two in terms of price, yet it encompasses both the practicality of ceramic and the beauty of stone. Think porcelain might be right for your home? Here are some of the reasons why we at Floor Coverings International Maple Grove recommend it to Maple Grove homeowners:
Advantages of Porcelain
- Porcelain is tougher and less porous than ceramic tile, so it offers excellent stain and water resistance. It also resists scratching, fire, bacteria, and odors, so it can take pretty much whatever you throw at it (literally). Though it may not be as tough as say, granite, it should hold up to many years of foot traffic without a problem.
- Since it’s less porous than other types of stone and tile, porcelain doesn’t require constant resealing. For the most part, it should be fine with just sweeping, vacuuming, and the occasional mop. Just be careful not to etch its surface with abrasive cleaning tools.
- Porcelain is also extremely stylish and versatile. Porcelain tile can come in simple, neutral styles or colorful, textured designs. It just depends on what you are looking for. Whether you are tiling a kitchen, bathroom, hallway, or sunroom, there’s a type of porcelain to suit your needs.
The one downside to porcelain (and all tile) is that it can be cold and hard to the touch. If you know you’ll be walking around in bare feet, you may want to consider installing radiant under-floor heating so that your tile floors will always be warm and comfortable.
